On the 18th March – in the week before World Poetry Day – Culture Shift partnered

with Writer’s Block and East Brighton Trust to bring a new event to Brighton at the

newly renovated venue at Moulsecoomb Place, known as The Skep.

Writer’s Block provides an opportunity for writers to perform new poetry for fans of

the spoken word in a relaxed and supportive environment. The event was hosted

by Woodzy who regularly works as part of the Culture Shift creative team and is

also an award-winning performer and TEDx speaker in his own right. He explains,

“As the founder of Writer's Block it has been amazing for me to collaborate with Culture Shift to be able to bring the event to Brighton. Our main goal is to change people's perception on poetry and to build community. Culture Shift have been fantastic when it comes to helping with this. The first event we put on was the perfect starting point of what I believe will be an incredible night that will continue to grow and bring people together. I'm very excited to see what the future holds for this collaboration!”

The night was sold out with an enthusiastic audience and a total of 8 performers

shared the stage through the evening with a varied mix of powerful, emotional and

funny poetry, mostly original writing along with some favorites.

As well as enjoying the performances, there were also writing prompts offered

during the evening which Woodzy collated to create a poem on the theme of ‘2026,

the year it all clicks…’

We are not broken but there’s still things we can fix

Making sure everyone counts

Creating spaces where people feel found

Start listening

Put upbeat feelings into the mix

From people studying academics

To bringing poetic magic

It’s not a straight path

But it’s a great journey

Making this evening very wordy

Hatching plans like little chicks

Open mics help you feel better even if it’s just a little bit

Other than having phones that click way too much

Writing can help you when you feel stuck

Click like the hammer against the bullet

Let’s make sure we live life to the fullest

Myth becomes stuff and all is well

These are the stories we were meant to tell

Kindness is a superpower

If each person was kinder to each other the the world might click

This

This is just the start of it

I’m glad it will all click

In 2026
