Voices from the Edges

diversity + music + community = confidence

Voices from the edges aims to give young people access to music making in a safe environment, supported by professional musicians.

This programme has been developed through and building on 10 years of experience, knowledge and techniques working alongside Delta 7, a BAFTA-nominated band of learning disabled musicians.

Voices From The Edges has been successfully delivered in both community and educational settings, creating opportunities for young people to immerse themselves in songwriting, try out instruments and the process of recording a song in a pop-up studio environment.

“For some young people, they’ve never seen a musical instrument, let alone touched one, so for the young people to be able to experiment with all the equipment, learn a new skill and sometimes boost their confidence is massively important”

Gemma Morgan, Youth Team Lead, Newhaven Youth Centre

During 2023/2024 we delivered 24 Voices From The Edges sessions at Newhaven Youth Centre during their Wednesday and Friday evening youth club sessions.

Over a period of 10 months we reached 80 young people facing barriers to music making, with support from Sussex Community Development Association (SCDA) youth workers to help young people participate and evaluate the impact of the activity.

Newhaven Youth Club reported that these sessions proved to be very successful in building individual confidence, alongside respect and understanding from peers, leading to increased inclusion and new friendships.
