New Shoots open space event

Arts Partnership Surrey previously commissioned research into how to support creative provision and development for young children in Surrey. Taking forward the recommendations of the report, the partnership developed a programme of work called New Shoots.

Culture Shift delivered an open space event for childcare providers, artists working with younger children, arts organisations, representatives from local authorities, libraries, museums, schools, nurseries and arts venues, in order to explore how to take this work forward.

Who was involved

  • Culture Shift in partnership with Rebecca Meitlis (Inspiring Connections)
  • Arts Partnership Surrey, a partnership of nine local authorities in Surrey working together to maximise resources and impact on arts development and creative provision
  • Delegates from a range of organisations with an interest in creative practice and provision for 0-7s

Enquiry

How do we ensure quality creative practice and provision for 0-7s through training and other development opportunities?

Objectives

  • To develop a dialogue between childcare providers, artists working with younger children, arts organisations, representatives from local authorities, libraries, museums, schools, nurseries and arts venues
  • To understand the issues and barriers in arts development and creative provision to young children in Surrey
  • To explore how all partners can best work together to develop existing provision and opportunities for young children in Surrey

Outcomes

The open space event was attended by 40 delegates from nurseries, local authorities, NHS organisations, libraries, schools, museums, heritage and arts organisations, as well as independent artists and creative practitioners.

Comments from delegates:

Everyone came with expertise from their field; I’ve learned a lot and gained a lot of insights.

There is a lot of ambition in the room. I also appreciated the structure and being given the chance to be passionate and jump in and out as I wished.

There were a lot of ideas about participation and working in a multi-disciplinary way. Thanks, it’s been so easy to come together.
