Your Town: Transformations by Young People and Engineers

14 June 2019

Culture Shift is delighted to have been funded through the Royal Academy of Engineering Ingenious Fund to run a new programme Your Town: Transformations by Young People and Engineers.

The Ingenious Fund is a national fund designed to inspire creative public engagement with engineering, providing opportunities for engineers to engage with people currently underrepresented in engineering.

Our project will see secondary and college age young people in Hastings, Eastbourne and Newhaven meet with engineers and find out more about what they do. Students will be invited to develop a project concept that they believe will enhance their lives or their town. Engineers will be found who are willing to guide young people in turning the project idea into a viable proposal.

Over 6 months, students will develop ideas, alongside engineers and other specialists, to be presented to a local audience, including potential backers and supporters.  Both young people and the engineers will have the pleasure of working with a real proposition, and for the young people it is one that is, or could become, part of their actual lives. Our project runs from September 2019-July 2020.

The involvement of engineers is pivotal to students understanding of what engineers do and how they make projects happen in the world about them. Engineering is in everything. Whatever other aspects a project has, the engineering aspects will be drawn out and supported. It is vital for our intended audience that they do not get put off because ‘engineering is not for me’ but find themselves to be engineers despite themselves.

Culture Shift is working closely with Lord Lucas, a passionate advocate for engineering, and local partners 3VA and the East Sussex Equalities and Participation Team. We are keen to hear from others that would like to get involved.
