REAL Creative for early years literacy

21 January 2019

REAL Creative is a fun family literacy programme based designed to Raise Early Achievement in Literacy. The REAL approach is designed to help early years settings and parents and carers to support young children’s literacy development with a focus on the home learning environment.

The REAL approach was initially developed at the University of Sheffield and has now been disseminated across the country by the National Children’s Bureau.

Our project, a partnership with FSN and ESCC, takes the REAL approach and extends it further through the involvement of creative practitioners and cultural settings working alongside children, families and settings.

Eight settings in Hastings and St Leonards have signed up: Artemis Nurseries in Hollington and on Chapel Park Road, Christchurch Nursery Academy, Fellowship of St Nicholas’s Greenway and St Nic’s nurseries, In2play at The Bridge, Jigsaw nursery at the YMCA and Little Dolphins in Hollington.

Over 6 months each of these settings will work with a selected group of children and their parents and carers to offer two home visits, a series of creative literacy events and a library visit.

Creative practitioners involved in the programme include Ed Boxall, Anne Colvin, Rebecca Fifield, Kevin Graal. Cultural partners include Hastings Library, De La Warr Pavilion, Hastings Museum and Jerwood Gallery.

The project is funded though the Hastings Opportunity Area Literacy Funds, with additional support from Sussex Community Foundation and Hastings and St Leonards Early Years Hub.
