Evaluation brief for REAL Creative

13 December 2018

Culture Shift, working with FSN and East Sussex Early Years Team is looking for a project evaluator to evaluate their project REAL Creative.

Making it REAL is a family literacy programme developed by the Early Childhood Unit at the National Children’s Bureau in partnership with the School of Education at the University of Sheffield. The model builds on the learning from Sheffield’s Raise Early Achievement in Literacy and offers families a number of home visits and events to explore key stands of literacy – books, early writing/mark making, environmental print and oral language.

REAL Creative is a new development, piloted in Hastings and Bexhill last year, which looks at the added benefits that creative practitioners and cultural spaces including libraries can bring to this approach to early literacy.  Each setting will be paired with a creative practitioner to develop their events, many of which will take place at cultural venues (De la Warr Pavilion, Hastings Museum, Jerwood Gallery, Hastings and Bexhill Libraries).

We are looking for an evaluator who will:

  • Analyse the impact on children’s literacy using data gathered pre- and post- project using NCB tools and ESCC language checkers
  • Analyse the degree to which the creative element adds value to the REAL approach
  • Assess the impact the programme has on the skills and knowledge of early years practitioners and parents
  • Produce a report for all stakeholders and funders

The evaluator will have access to pre- and post- observation forms that early years practitioners fill in with parents and to the ESCC language checkers. They will be expected to attend and input into two network events during the project where all practitioners come together to reflect on progress. The evaluator will also be encouraged to interview a number of parents and early years practitioners as part of the process.

We ask that the evaluator has a current DBS check.

To apply, please send a CV and covering letter outlining your skills, experience and approach to this brief to: catherine@cultureshift.org.uk. Deadline for applications 10 January, interviews will be held in Hastings on Thursday January 24 in the afternoon.

Fee: £2500 to include travel and other expenses

REAL Creative is funded by DfE through Hastings Opportunity Area, the Early Years Hubs in Hastings and St Leonards and Bexhill and Sussex Community Foundation.
