A FACILITATION case study

EVERY SORT OF PEOPLE FESTIVAL

Our approach to facilitation is...

  • Asset-based, working from the knowledge, resources and experience available

  • Light-of-touch, always with humour and sensitivity

  • Inclusive, with consistent attention to accessibility to ensure that everyone is safe and supported

  • Engaging, so that everyone can participate actively, creatively and meaningfully

Every Sort of Facilitation

Our experience has allowed our facilitation skills to develop in a wide variety of contexts; from small scale groupwork such as organisational Away Days, workshops and consultative events, to large scale projects such as The Every Sort of People Festival.

In 2016, Culture Shift, in partnership with Lewes Football Club, had an idea for an accessible community festival. This came out of our work in learning disability arts and accessible programming, which resonated with Lewes FC’s role as a community football club.

Culture Shift successfully raised funds from Big Lottery and Sussex Community Foundation and developed an active partnership of Lewes-based community organisations to steer and deliver the event. The aim was to create a truly accessible community event for people of all backgrounds, abilities and ages to enjoy. To reflect this ambition, the project was called Every Sort of People and the first ever Every Sort of People Festival happened at Lewes Football Club Stadium in May 2017.

Through Culture Shift facilitation, over 30 local community sector organisations contributed to the huge success of the Every Sort of People Festival, with over 1000 people attending the event on the day. This really was an excellent example of an asset-based approach to community action.

A full evaluation report of the event is available here.

“The Every Sort of People Festival was very well planned and run by lots of enthusiastic people, seemed like there were lots of busy people knowing what to do and when, while helping individuals with additional needs. A very professional event, I could see how much work had gone into making the day a success.”
