Worthing Arts and Education Network

Culture Shift has been working with Photoworks and Worthing College to support a new school and college arts and education network.

Funded by Artswork, the SE Bridge, the network has been set up to test models for partnership between schools, colleges and arts and cultural organisations, with a view to sharing innovative practice and exploring the potential for an ongoing network in the area. Culture Shift’s role has been to support the group to develop plans, review activity and share learning with others.

Schools and arts and cultural organisations first came together in January 2016 to audit existing activity in the area and to explore opportunities for partnership.

Schools each identified a cultural partner to develop a new area of work, and each partnership had a small amount of funding to test out new ideas. All activity was delivered between March and June 2016. A number of schools built Arts Award into their delivery and all have signed up to applying for Artsmark.

The partnerships

Bramber Primary and Worthing College worked together with Photoworks. The partnership made links with Brighton Festival events to explore developing skills in the primary setting. They also worked with 6th form college students in primary classes, with support and overview from artist Annis Joslin.

Davison High School worked with Worthing Museum and Art Gallery, using the collections to devise short dramatic pieces based on women’s lives in the 1940s.

Chatsmore Catholic High School worked with Creative Waves to develop a piece of public art based on the Battle of Boar’s Head, known also as The Day that Sussex Died. This involved students working with their feeder primaries.

Worthing High School worked with Always Possible to develop knowledge and skills in technical theatre through bringing JT Thomson from Ampersand Live, a technical theatre professional, to work with GCSE students and the drama teacher.

Fantastic opportunity to network and discuss some exciting projects.

Very useful to find out what schools are interested in and what they/other local organisations are doing in terms of creative projects. Good potential for mutual support.
